Hmm... She Looks Familiar
We’re huge fans of the annual ATX Television Festival and the accompanying Pitch Competition. Ridiculous Danger's very own Kelly Brown has attended pretty much every year since its kickoff. And for the 2024 event, she's doing more than attending. As a two-time competition finalist, she'll be hosting this year’s finals, in which writers pitch their projects in front of a panel of industry judges and a live audience.
Brown said, "The Pitch Competition is such an exciting part of the festival. The live audience adds elements of immediacy and electricity that not only helps you see what works and what doesn't, but also makes a typically weighty situation incredibly fun."
She first landed in the finals in the event’s second year with Gold, a script she developed with writers Morty Coyle and Ridiculous Danger co-founder David Vienna. In 2023, she and Kerry Schwartz also made it to the finals with their script for A Series of Unfortunate Men, based on Schwartz's book of the same name.
And, as Brown points out, winning the competition isn't necessarily everything. "There are so many benefits that come with making it even to the semifinals," she said. "Each tier comes with various forms of information, tools, and in some cases, access. It's unrivaled in other script competitions."
Because of her expertise in the arena of developing and pitching projects, and her longtime involvement with the ATX Festival, organizers Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland invited Brown to host the live pitch night that kicks off the weekend-long event, which takes over downtown Austin, TX, May 30-June 2.
